Description
NV200 Roof Racks are quite expensive. Also I couldn’t find a basic simple roof rack for my van and didn’t want a heavy duty industrial type. No other choice than to build my own. Fortunately it was quite easy.
Parts Needed:
1. Aluminum rounded edge railing — 1 3/4 inch x 6 feet…3 pieces.
2. An assortment of #8 Metric nuts and bolts… the stock size of the pre-drilled roof holes.
3. Hockey pucks…6 in total. (or other rubber spacers)
The pictures make everything rather self-explanatory. First I just had some old sockets as spacers but realized they were not ideal for the task so I used hockey pucks instead. At first I had longer bolts with the head showing on top the rail but decided to counter-sink them instead as it didn’t look right and I was concerned about flexing with a heavy load on top.
I’m looking around for some end plugs to finish off the railing end holes. If nothing else, I’ll print some with my 3D printer and post them later.
Note: I didn’t bother with the front cross-bar because I don’t really need one. Also I remember from other vehicles I’ve owned –the front cross-bar makes a lot of wind noise so I left it off.
